In the beginning it was working below 3 Mbps. Metcalfe then joined Digital Equipment Corporation, a joint venture with Intel and Xerox, where Ethernet Version 1 was introduced in 1980. In 1983, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers approved the Ethernet 802.3 standard.
